Octave Sykes Stevenson was Chief of the Literature Division, District of Columbia Public Library frin 1955-1991 and Chief of the Language and Literature Division at Martin Luther King Memorial Library from 1972-1991. During those years, he played an active role in the DC poetry community, originating and directing the Poets in Person series and numerous other public programs at the library.He compiled and edited an anthology of area poetry, The Poet Upstairs, published by Washington Writers Publishing House in 1979.
